MDP announces ballot box locations for primary

Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Thursday announced the locations at which ballot boxes will be placed in the Male' region in their party primary slated for Friday.

The primary is being held to elect and award party tickets for those representing the party in the upcoming local council election.

According to MDP, ballot boxes will be placed at six locations in capital Male' while a ballot box each will be placed in Hulhumale' and Villimale', at Rehendhi School and Muhyiddin School respectively.

The ballot boxes to vote for Male' city will be placed at convention centre Dharubaaruge in the capital. The boxes for Ga., GDh. Sh., and N. atolls will be placed at Kalaafaanu School while voting for Addu City, V., M., F. and Dh., atolls will be ongoing at Majeedhiya School. Those voting for Ha., HDh., K., Aa. and ADh. atolls will have to vote at Imaaduddin School while those voting for Fuvahmulah City, R., B., and Lh. atolls are to vote at Iskandar School. Voting for Th. and L. atolls will be ongoing at MDP Haruge.

According to MDP, over 90,000 members are eligible to vote in the primary and 1246 candidates will be contesting in the primary.

983 officials will be elected to island and city councils in the local council election scheduled to take place on April 4. While 33% of these seats have been reserved for women under recent amendments to the Decentralization Act, 930 members will be elected to Women's Development Committees on the same day.

In addition to MDP, other partners of the ruling coalition are preparing to hold their own primaries. While Jumhooree Party will hold their primary on February 12, opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is scheduled to hold their primary on February 7.
