141 applications for LCE received: EC

Elections Commission (EC) has revealed that 141 candidacy forms have been submitted at the commission for the upcoming local council election.

The electoral watchdog began accepting candidacy papers of those interested in contesting in the local council election, and the Women's Development Committee election on February 4. The deadline for application will expire on February 20.

Deputy President of EC, Ahmed Akram on Saturday revealed that 141 forms have been submitted thus far to contest in the local council election. 50 individuals have applied to contest for Women's Development Committees.

The candidates representing political parties in both elections are yet to submit their applications. Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), ruling coalition partner Jumhooree Party (JP) and opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have conducted their party primaries to choose the contestants that will represent the parties in the elections.

Akram said it is estimated that over 6000 candidates will contest in the elections that will become the election with the most number of candidates to be held in the Maldives to date.

269,562 people are eligible to vote in the election slated for April 4.
