Council Election: 27,000 people re-registered thus far

Election Commission has stated that 27,000 people have re-registered for the upcoming local council election to be held on April 4.

Speaking to AVAS, the Vice President and Chief Spokesperson of EC Ahmed Akram said that application for re-registration is still open, and 27,000 re-registration forms have been received thus far.

Akram said only those who wish to change their registered address for the 2019 parliamentary election have to re-register for the council election. Therefore, there will not be much change in the registration.

“So far, around 27,000 people have re-registered. Jails, resorts and industrials islands will be exempted in this process as those islands’ registration forms will be brought on Wednesday in bulk. Tomorrow will be a big day for the re-registration. We have given relief of registration this time given the fact that this time [for council election] only those who have changed their registered address for last parliamentary election have to re-register”, said Akram.

Akram added that the only resort that met the registration criteria by yesterday was Club Med Kanifinolhu. He said that opportunity has been presented to 53 resorts to meet the criteria of having a minimum of 50 votes registered at the location to be eligible for a ballot box to be placed on the island.

Akram urged to register soon, especially those in resorts as the deadline for re-registration is fast approaching, which falls on the 27th of this month.
