Ministry conducts psychological first aid training for teachers

Education Ministry has implemented a programme to train teachers on psychological first aid.

Education Ministry on Saturday said the purpose of the programme is to provide efficient and practical aid for the school children who are psychologically affected by COVID-19 pandemic.

The programme is a joint effort of Education Ministry, UNICEF, Maldives Red Crescent. Trainers from MRC are delivering the training. As of now, a total of 407 teachers have been trained under the programme.

"One of the aims of the programme is to make teachers capable of addressing the anxiety children may have as quickly as possible since they are the first persons the children will meet once the schools reopen”.

The content of the programme covers how to identify children in need of psychological assistance, how to deal and care for such children, how to assist such children, and how one should be cautious in providing the first aid.

The Education Ministry further said that after teachers are trained, the training will be provided for the schools’ counsellors. The ministry said the counsellors would be trained to provide the most appropriate psychological assistance for the children who need help beyond psychological first aid.

Education Ministry is preparing for schools to reopen on July 1.
