Prosecutors to be assigned to cases within 24 hours

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has publicized a policy under which a state Prosecutor will be assigned to serious criminal cases and cases linked to the public welfare within 24 hours of the police filing the case with the PGO.

A statement released by PGO said new system on communication between the police and PGO on criminal cases has been in effect since last Monday. Under the new policies, information and opinions on the cases can be shared in real time between the two institutions via a special online portal established between both parties. As soon as the information of an arrest is entered into the system by the police, the PGO will be alerted regarding the arrest via the portal. A prosecutor or a team of prosecutors will be assigned to the case within 24 hours, said PGO.

Arrangements will be made such that all communication between the prosecutors and the police are visibile in writing in the portal. The new system will also streamline the processes of joint efforts carried out between the police and the PGO with regards to serious criminal cases. The same system will be followed across Maldives, said PGO.

The new system has been established as per the recommendation of the National Security Service Committee of the Parliment.
