Schools to reopen on Sunday

The Maldives’ Education Ministry has announced that schools, including those in the Greater Male' Region, will reopen on January 10th as per the academic calendar for the current year.

The ministry made the announcement amid speculations that schools may continue to remain closed due to the country’s situation due to COVID-19 still remaining a threat.

A circular issued by the Ministry on Monday said the second term of the 2020 - 2021 academic year will kick off on Sunday. In-school classes will resume for grades Lower Kindergarten through Year 12, said the ministry.

Schools will reopen with proper safety measures in place, assured the ministry. Schools will be open for a duration between four to five hours every day. While schools will be closed in islands where a lockdown is active, classes will be held in islands on monitoring status as per the recommendations of the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Classes will be held in islands with no active cases for the foundations stage upto Year 12.

According to the academic calendar, the second term will begin on January 10th and end on June 24th. The new academic year will begin on August 10th.
