Guraidhoo MP Riza passes away

Guraidhoo Constituency MP Ibrahim Riza has passed away.

Riza, a member of the opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), died early Thursday while undergoing treatment in Malaysia for an intestinal ailment. Riza's death was confirmed by some MPs and by his party.

Riza had been a member of the Guraidhoo constituency since the 17th Parliament. The MP, who worked as a lawyer before being elected to the Parliament, had also served as a member of the Judicial Service Commission in the 18th Parliament.

The PPM said in a press statement that Riza's death would be an irreplaceable loss to the opposing PPM/PNC coalition and former President Abdulla Yameen. Riza had been doing valuable services to the party since its inception till his last moment, read the statement. Riza did a lot of work in forming the DRP and PPM, and he also rendered invaluable services to the Maldivian state as a member of Parliament for a very long time and as a lawyer, said PPM.

Article 79 of the Constitution states that a member of Parliament shall be elected to a vacated seat within 60 days from the date of the vacancy.
