'Aim to win SAFF Suzuki Cup,' Maldives pres tells football team

Incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Wednesday urged the national football team to make winning the upcoming South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) championship, their lofty ambition.

Speaking during a ceremony held in the capital Male to inaugurate 50 futsal grounds, under the government's Sports Arena project, president Yameen highlighted that the Maldivian team has already proved their capability to win the competition.

In this regard, the President emphasized that Maldives winning the SAFF Championship in 2008 was proof that Maldives is among one of the top football talents in the South Asian region.

The national football team will participate in the SAFF Championship, scheduled to begin in Bangladesh next month.

President Yameen expressed hopes that the team would bring good name to the country, and urged the nation to fully support and get behind the national football team.
