A Russian woman holidaying on a safari boat drowned Sunday while out snorkeling amid a spate of drownings in the luxury island destination.
Police said the incident was reported just past sunset on Sunday adding that the 40 year old Russian tourist was out snorkeling near Alif Dhaal Atoll Mushimasmigili.
It was the fifth drowning since the new year and came a day after an 84 year old Czech tourist was discovered floating dead in the sea at Paradise Island Resort of Male' atoll.
Earlier this week, an elderly Korean tourist had drowned at the same resort, while two Filipino honeymooners also drowned tragically in a similar incident in Dhiffushi Island recently.
Following the incidents, the Tourism Ministry has initiated a new campaign to re-inspect all tourist accommodation facilities to ensure that they are safe environments and poses no risks to it visitors.
