Did not flee from authorities, says motorist

Cyclist who was arrested for feeling the scene after a deadly accident has stated that he did not hide from authorities.

A young man was killed last Saturday after a speeding motorcycle crashed into a handcart parked in a narrow road of capital Male. The 22-year old victim was a passenger on the backseat of the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle fled the scene shortly after the accident, and his whereabouts had remained unknown for the past few days. The cyclist, identified as Ahmed Athif Abdulla, 26, was found and arrested under a court order on Monday, and has been remanded into custody for ten days.

Speaking at court, Athif said he did not flee the scene of the accident. He did not deny that he was the driver of the vehicle, and said the victim was his friend. He told the court that he had a three-month old child and that there would be no one to care for the baby if he is remanded into custody. However, since he is accused of a criminal offence, the judge ordered for him to be taken into custody.
