Ex-Pres Yameen summoned to police HQ

Former President of the Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom was summoned to Maldives Police Service on Saturday.

AVAS has learned that President Yameen was summoned to the police headquarters regarding the MMPRC graft scandal which is being investigated by the police.

Member of Yameen's legal team, Adam Asif said Yameen is being to the police at this time as a distraction from the internal conflict ongoing among members of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Asif said it is common for Yameen to be summoned to police during such conflicts as it is a move that pleases several members of MDP.

The former president is currently serving a five-year sentence on a money-laundering conviction. He was changed to home arrest on April 29 due to the country's COVID-19 situation.
