May 6 attack: Charges raised against three additional suspects

Charges have been raised against three additional suspects linked to the May 6 terror attack.

A terror attack was carried out against Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed on May 6 by detonating an IED as he entered his vehicle near his residence in capital Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the IED was strapped to a motorcycle parked nearby. Nasheed sustained serious injuries in the attack and multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital in Male'. Nasheed traveled to Germany on May 13 for additional treatment, and he is currently recuperating from his injuries in the United Kingdom. Nine suspects linked to the attack are in custody.

The Prosecutor General's Office earlier raised charges against four suspects: Adhuham Ahmed, Mujaz Ahmed, Thahmeen Ahmed and Ali Haisham. The Prosecutor General's Office has now forwarded charges against three additional suspects, Fahmy Ali, Mohamed Nazim and Ishaq to the Criminal Court.

Fahmy Ali was charged with participating in carrying out an act of terrorism while Mohamed Nazim was charged with conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism. Three charges were raised against Ishaq: aiding in transporting explosives, conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism and participating in carrying out an act of terrorism.

Others arrested in connection to the attack are Abdulla Ali Manik and Mohamed Thasleem.
