PO dismisses ex-tourism minister's allegations against pres

The President's Office has dismissed allegations made by former Tourism Minister, Ali Waheed that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was involved in the MMPRC graft.

Ali Waheed, against whom several charges of sexual harassment have been raised, held a virtual press conference Monday night while in the United Kingdom. During the press conference, he spoke at length regarding the MMPRC scandal among other topics.

Ali Waheed said President Solih visited former Vice Resident Ahmed Adeeb at his residence at Rehendhi Flats in Male', and left with MVR 35 million linked to the MMPRC scandal in a black bag. At the time, President Solih was the leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group. Ali claims the existence of CCTV footage that shows the president leaving with the bag.

Addressing the allegations, Spokesperson at the President's Office, Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said President Solih himself had previously addressed similar allegations against him and made it clear that he had not received any funds linked to the MMPRC graft. The spokesperson dismissed Ali Waheed's allegations as false.

'Has not the president asked anyone with any evidence to come forward? Today, I have to reiterate the president's request and ask Ali Waheed to come forward with evidence to prove his allegations,' Mabrook said.

When previously asked regarding the MMPRC scandal, the president had said there would be no evidence that could compromise him. He also requested any person with any evidence to make it public.
