PPM celebrates 10th anniversary

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has celebrated its 10th anniversary.

PPM is among one of the most successful political parties of the Maldives, and is the party with the second-largest membership. Special activities were held on Wednesday night on the outer Boduthakurufaanu Magu infront of PPM Office to mark the occasion. This included a feast as well as a flag-hoisting ceremony. The picture of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, which adorns the offices' outer wall was also replaced with a new picture.

PPM was established by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom following dispute within his party, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). In 2013, PPM became the ruling party of the Maldives after its candidate and Maumoon's half-brther, Yameen won the 2013 presidential election.

Due to a leadership dispute between Maumoon and Yameen, the former president and his top aides were ousted from the party and Yameen took over the reins of the party through the court in 2016. A sister party, Peoples' National Congress (PNC) was formed by Yameen due to fears of loss of leadership of PPM. The two parties now work together as a coalition called the Progressive Congress Coalition.
