COVID-19: Discussions ongoing to strengthen measures in Addu City

The Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has said discussions are ongoing regarding strengthening the measures against COVID-19 in southernmost Addu City.

Speaking at a news conference held Sunday, the center's Spokesperson, Dr. Fathmath Nazla Rafeeq, said the situation in Addu is highly concerning and that the center is in discussion with Addu City Council on steps that can be taken to improve the current situation. Nazla said HEOC is providing support and assistance to the City Council in managing the crisis in Addu.

Addu City has remained under the Health Protection Agency (HPA)'s monitoring status for over three months. The number of COVID-19 deaths recorded in the atoll has also been increasing over the past few weeks.

Some measures are already in place in Addu to prevent the spread of the disease. In this regard, classes have been switched to online for lower grades, and restaurants and food kiosks have been closed as a precautionary measure.
