COVID-19: Over 2000 cases, 4 deaths in 24 hours

The Maldives on Thursday recorded 2199 positive cases of COVID-19. The new cases increase the island nation's tally to 110,931.

According to the most recent statistics released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), 1348 cases were recorded in the capital city, Male'. This is the highest number of positive cases recorded in the city in recent history. The current positivity rate for the area is 34 percent.

While 10,537 cases are active across the Maldives, 43 are admitted at hospitals. HPA numbers show seven are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. A further 531 cases were registered in the atolls and 83 in resorts.

The Maldives recorded four COVID-19 deaths on Thursday. The first death was of a 79-year-old local male admitted at Laamu COVID Facility. A second death was recorded at 6:16 am of a 63-year-old local woman admitted at the Hulhumale Medical Facility. The third death occurred at Addu COVID Facility around 9 am, when a 76-year-old local male passed away. The fourth death was recorded at 1:47 pm when an 84-year-old local male admitted at the Laamu facility passed away.

The death toll has now climbed to 269.
