Building used as campaign hall, flu clinic burns down in fire

Rumaalu-2 campaign hall in capital Male' caught on fire on Friday afternoon.

According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), they received reports of a fire at 2:47 pm. The blaze was controlled by 3:15 pm. While the fire caused significant damage to the building, the source of the fire is not clear. No persons were injured in the incident.

The Rumaalu-2 campaign hall was used during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's presidency as a campaign hall for his party, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s political activities. The building was recently used as a flu clinic for those with COVID-19 symptoms. After the flu clinic closed, drug addicts are rumored to use the building as a drug den.
