Technology Ministry discusses seeking Starlink services

The Maldives' Technology Minister Aminath Shauna Sunday met with officials from SpaceX regarding the Starlink Satellite Internet Service.

Elon Musk's SpaceX operates the Starlink satellites, which provide satellite internet access coverage across the globe using over 1,700 low orbit satellites. Starlink enables high data rate activities that are not possible with satellite internet.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology said its minister met with SpaceX's Starlink Market Access Director, Ryan Goodnight, to discuss SpaceX's plans to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband internet across the globe. However, no further information regarding the meeting was shared.

While the technical possibility of Starlink's satellite internet service covers most of the global population, actual service can be delivered only in countries that have licensed SpaceX to provide service within any specific national jurisdiction. As of January 2022, the beta internet service offering is available in 25 countries.
