Nasheed benefited the most from the MMPRC graft: MP Siyam

Meedhoo MP and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has said Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed benefited the most from the MMPRC graft.

MMPRC scandal is the biggest corruption case in the Maldives to date, with millions in state funds earned via leasing islands and lagoons embezzled from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). State funds were laundered and deposited into multiple accounts through SOF Pvt Ltd.

Speaking at a press conference held by MDA on Wednesday, Siyam said political charges are on the rise and that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is very much politically influenced.

Condemning political figures sitting on JSC, Siyam said if his party or a party endorsed by him would not allow political figures to sit on JSC. He assured that he would reform JSC and ensure justice for Maldivians. He further said justice could not be established as long as Speaker Nasheed was a JSC member.

'Who benefited the most from the biggest corruption scandal in the country's history? The Speaker of the current Parliament. The world is aware of this reality. The Parliament Speaker benefited the most from the MMPRC graft,' Siyam alleged.

MDA held Wednesday's press conference after a long duration of inactivity. Siyam said the party's activities were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the party's activities have now been resumed.

The last Parliament had five MDA members when it was in a coalition with the then-ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). However, only two MDA members sit on the Parliament, and the party has no alliances formed with any other party. In this Parliament term, MDA has not been politically active.
