Maldives, India discuss establishing Parliamentary Friendship Group

Discussions on establishing an India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group have taken place.

The discussions took place in a meeting between Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Indian Parliament Lok Sabha's Speaker Om Birla during Nasheed's ongoing visit to India.

During the call, Speaker Birla extended an invitation to the members of the Maldives Parliament's Public Finance Committee and Foreign Affairs Committee to visit India. Some Indian media have reported that Birla had said there must be ways that MPs of both Parliaments can discuss and cooperate in the field of diplomacy.

Birla also noted that the Digitalization and Archives and Legislative Drafting agreements between India and Maldives were now in effect. He further hinted that India would provide technical assistance and training to Maldivian MPs and Parliament Secretariat.

The Maldives Parliament has already established friendship groups with MPs of some countries.
