The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has postponed its congress to August 19 this year.
The congress was originally scheduled for August 4.
MDP on Sunday held its National Assembly, where the party's Vice-President and President's Office Minister Mohamed Shifaz moved a resolution to delay the congress in order to fit in some arrangements within the dates in the party's charters.
MDP's last congress was held in June 2018 in Aa. Ukulhas, where the decision to nominate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the party's presidential candidate that year was made.
In this year's upcoming congress, MDP will decide on submitting major amendments to the constitution to the Parliament. MDP's President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has previously said he would propose an amendment to hold a second round between presidential candidates who receive the most votes if they receive less than 30 percent of the total vote. He said that such an amendment is being sought because the people want the MDP to win the 2023 Presidential Election and stay in power.
