Weather alerts issued to 17 islands; sea swells still surging

Maldives Meteorological Services has issued weather alerts to 17 atolls.

The MET Office issued Yellow Alerts until 2:00 p.m for the areas between Ha. atoll and Th. atoll. Severe sea swells are being experienced in several islands. Winds will be between 25 and 30 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph. Heavy rains and very rough seas are expected in these atolls.

The Met Office also issued Yellow Alerts this morning for the area between Lh. atoll and Th.atoll. A while alert is also in effect for the area between L. atoll and S. atoll. The alert will be in effect until 4:00 pm, as winds will be between 22 and 27 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph during rain storms. Seas are also expected to be rough.

While yellow alerts have been issued for 17 atolls, severe sea swells caused flooding and damage in 19 islands on Friday. On Saturday, sea swells hit Th. Thimarafushi and Madifushi and caused flooding. MNDF is working on receding flood waters.
