Green Tax revenue so far this year has increased by 27 percent compared to the same period last year.
According to national tax agency, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), Green Tax collection stood at MVR 398 million from January to June last year. However, the amount received during the same period this year exceeds MVR 547 million. This is an increase of 27 percent.
The tax collected in June this year stood at MVR 70 million. However, during the same month last year, Green Tax collection stood at MVR 59 million. Green Tax revenue collected in USD thus far this year stood at USD 35 million, compared to the USD 26 million received last year.
The government introduced the Green Tax in October 2016 to gather funds to tackle environmental issues in the Maldives. USD 3 is charged as Green Tax per tourist at local guest houses and USD 6 is charged per head at other tourism service providers.
