President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is scheduled to undertake an official visit to India next month.
Some Indian newspapers have reported that President Solih will visit India on August 2 for two days. The President's Office could not be reached for comment regarding the visit.
According to Indian media, the President will hold discussions with Indian authorities on accelerating the implementation of projects in the Maldives with the assistance of the Government of India. He will also have talks with Indian business people to secure some investments in the Maldives.
President Solih's maiden visit to a foreign country since taking office was to India. Similarly, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first trip abroad since being re-elected for a second term as PM was also to the Maldives. During his first tenure, he visited the Maldives for President Solih's swearing-in ceremony on November 17, 2018.
Relations between India and Sri Lanka have strengthened since President Solih took office. However, the Maldivian opposition has accused India of threatening Maldives' independence and sovereignty.
