The Maldives is among the five fastest growing economies in the world, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has said.
Speaking at the MDP Congress, Minister Ameer said the Maldives is now among the five fastest growing economies in the world, assisted with the aid received during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"During COVID-19, the estimated revenue of MVR 30 billion fell to MVR 15 billion. However, we tried to keep the economy running. So, we supported the smallest businesses and individuals," the minister said.
"MVR 421 million was disbursed to over 22,000 people. In addition, 2133 businesses received MVR 367 million, and 419 large enterprises received MVR 578 million. All households, 97,000 households received. And 21,123 businesses received MVR 976 million. The result [of the efforts] is that the Maldives is among the five fastest growing economies of 2022," he said.
Ameer said the economic growth rate in 2022 will be between 12 percent and 18 percent in 2022. He also assured that the Maldives' GDP would surpass 2019 figures.
