'There will be no islands without a habour at the end of the term'

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Sunday that the administration aims to alleviate inter-island transportation challenges before its term in office. He made this statement at a ceremony to inaugurate the newly upgraded harbour on Veyvah Island in the Meemu Atoll.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc (MTCC) is the contractor for the project. Highlighting that harbour and coastal protection projects are currently underway in 115 islands across the country, the President said that MTCC had completed 38 projects. The rest of the projects are in different stages of development.

The main economic activities of the Veyvah Island community are fishing and fish processing, which require a harbour that provides safe anchorage and cargo transfer for fishing vessels. The President noted that, until today, the island lacked such facilities vital to its economic growth. The President said that despite the small size and population of the island, his administration focuses on equitable development between all islands. The water and sewerage projects on Veyvah Island are also in progress.

The President also compared the developments brought to the island under his administration to the five-year term of the previous administration. Over the past four years, this administration has initiated developmental projects on the island worth over MVR100 million, while the previous administration had only spent MVR2 million over five years.
