A bill on amending the Goods and Service Tax Act has been submitted to the Parliament.
The Attorney General's Office said three bills were sent to the Parliament Office on Sunday. They are bills seeking to amend the Tourism Act, the Goods and Service Tax Act, and the Judiciary Act.
The government had earlier announced that it would propose amendments to the GST Act to increase the percentage charged as GST.
At a press conference held on July 7 at the President's Office, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer announced that the government had decided to increase the TGST from 12 percent to 16 percent and GST from 6 percent to 8 percent. The minister said he would propose the amendments before the opening of Parliament. He said the hope is to bring the changes to the law within the next six months.
