The Criminal Court hearing scheduled for Monday in the money-laundering case against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has been canceled.
The hearing was scheduled for 9:30 am to record the testimonies of witnesses. However, the hearing could not proceed as scheduled due to a water leak in the courtroom due to heavy rain. The Criminal Court said the hearing has now been rescheduled to a later date. Hearings will be held on September 6 and 7, the court said.
The last hearing in the case was held on August 23. Although a hearing was scheduled for August 30, the hearing was canceled as the Chief Judge presiding over the case, Judge Ahmed Shakeel, was on leave.
Yameen has been charged with accepting bribes and money laundering in relation to the sale of Aarah island. Along with the former president, the state has charged former MP Yoosuf Naeem with bribery. The two are being tried together.
The existing building of the Criminal Court is very dilapidated and has many cracks.
