Hanimaadhoo Airport construction to begin next month

The Economic Ministry has said that the construction of Hanimaadhoo International Airport will begin in January.

Economic Ministry's Media Officer Ismail Maaiz told AVAS today that work related to the project began shortly after the airport development agreement was signed with the contractor. The construction work will begin next month, he said.

"Site clearance, design, and survey work are underway. These are also practical work," Maaiz said.

India's JMC Projects Limited was awarded the contract for the development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport on September 25 for USD 136.6 million. The Maldives government first announced the decision on October 10.

JMC is already involved in flat construction and water and sewerage projects in the Maldives. In India, JMC handles large-scale projects in the construction and energy sectors.

The development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport is a presidential pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The Hanimaadhoo International Airport is designed to have the capacity to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft.
