Criminal Court schedules Fuggiri hearing for Tuesday

The Criminal Court has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday to hear the charges raised by the state against former President Abdulla Yameen in relation to the sale of R. Fuggiri island.

The prosecution has charged the former president with accepting bribes and money laundering.

The prosecution has also raised charges against Sun Investment, Sun Construction, and Ahmed 'Krik' Riza of Ma. Kurikeela Hiyaa. The charges are scheduled for 10:00 am on Tuesday.

The two charges against President Yameen, in this case, are using his positional influence to take bribes in leasing Fuggiri island and using the funds to commit money laundering. Yameen is accused of accepting US$1.1 million in bribes.

According to the charges, President Yameen took bribes by leasing the Fuggiri island to build a resort through Ahmed Krik Riza. The money laundering was done using Sun Construction and Engineering and Sun Investment. While Riza has been charged with money laundering and intermediary in bribery, Sun Investment, and Sun Construction Company have been charged with money laundering.

Criminal Court Chief Justice Ahmed Shakeel, who was hearing the case, withdrew from the case last month. The case will now be handled by Judge Ali Nadheem.

President Yameen is currently serving an 11-year sentence after being found guilty of money laundering and bribery in the lease of V. Aarah last month.
