Parliament Speaker and President of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed, has said the construction of a resort in Gn. Fuvahmulah would begin in November this year.
Nasheed made the statement while speaking to MDP members in Fuvahmulah on his campaign tour to the island for Saturday's presidential primary.
Speaking at the meeting, Nasheed said that after the development of Fuvahmulah airport, the MDP proposed to designate the city's beach area as a separate area for tourism development. Nasheed said the area has been separated since 2018 and was the same when MDP's first government came to power in 2008.
Nasheed said the MDP's manifesto for the 2018 presidential election included several plans to develop a resort in the designated area. However, while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's term is ending, the government still needs to implement the plans, said Nasheed.
"I can assure you that the construction of a resort will start in November," Nasheed said.
The former Maldives president said that Fuvahmulah became known to the entire world due to the expansive vision of the island's people. Fuvahmulah is famous for its natural resources, biodiversity, and marine wealth, he said.
Nasheed will go head to head with President Solih for MDP's presidential ticket on Saturday. Both candidates are confident of winning the election.
