Jamiyyath Salaf calls to impeach President Solih

The President of the Jamiyyath Salaf, Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohamed, has called to impeach President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Jamiyyath Salaf is a religious organization that periodically issues statements and stances on political issues from a religious point of view.

In a tweet, the religiously conservative organization's president said pursuing a no-confidence motion against the President is in the national interest.

"It is in the national interest to move a no-confidence motion against the President as he has betrayed the country and the people in dealing with the Chagos issue," he said.

Last week, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) settled a territorial dispute between Mauritius and the Maldives regarding an overlapping maritime boundary between the two countries.

The maritime dispute between Mauritius and the Maldives came after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in September 2019 declared the Chagos Archipelago south of the Maldives a sovereign territory of Mauritius, and the Maldives for the first time last year acknowledged that Chagos was part of Mauritius. Many believe the Maldives' acknowledgment influenced the recent ITLOS decision, which divided an overlapping area of 95,000 sq kilometers between the Maldives and Mauritius, according to 47,232 sq kilometers, the larger portion of the overlapping area, to the Maldives and 45,331 sq kilometers of the disputed area to Mauritius.

In his tweet, Sheikh Abdullah said the Chagos issue is a serious territorial, political, and geographical issue. He said a country's border is a great trust and that the issue should be investigated.
