State pursues civil case to recover MVR 2 million fine from Adeeb

The state is pursuing a civil case to recover an MVR 2 million fine from former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb related to the MMPRC corruption scandal.

Adeeb was ordered by the Criminal Court to pay the fine in connection to two of the seven charges filed against him in relation to the MMPRC graft. Although he was ordered to pay the money within a month, the fine remains unpaid, and the Attorney General's Office has taken the case to the Civil Court.

Adeeb is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence, mostly under house arrest, after signing a plea agreement with the prosecution. The government has faced criticism for allowing Adeeb to remain under house arrest, although officials have cited health reasons for the arrangement.
