President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the President of the Seychelles, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan, delivered a joint statement at the President's Office on Monday.
The Seychellois President and First Lady are currently on a state visit to the Maldives at the invitation of President Solih.
In the joint statement, President Solih and President Ramkalawan highlighted the similarities between their countries, including culture, livelihoods, and ways of living. They expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of ocean resources to both countries' economies and the significance of Indian Ocean security for regional peace and stability.
Climate change and its impacts were identified as the primary concern for both nations. President Solih emphasized the need for cooperation between the two countries to share experiences and address the developmental challenges of climate change. He further noted that various issues of mutual interest were discussed during the official talks, as were ways to strengthen relations between the two countries.
President Solih stated that four agreements were exchanged between the two countries to facilitate closer ties. These agreements aim to promote people-to-people exchanges and interactions. President Solih and President Ramkalawan also emphasized the importance of increased trade and experience sharing.
President Solih and President Ramkalawan agreed to collaborate in addressing security concerns in the Indian Ocean region, including emerging threats such as piracy, drug trafficking, terrorism, and illegal fishing. President Solih noted that the Protocol on Cooperation to Combat Transnational Organised Crime and Other Maritime Security and Safety Threats signed today is a significant step towards enhanced collaboration and joint efforts in ensuring regional security.
