Formal discussions have commenced between the opposition PPM-PNC coalition and The Democrats, the emerging party led by former President Mohamed Nasheed, with the aim of establishing a political alliance.
The first such meeting was held at 11:00 am on Sunday at the Ocean Library located at Ma. South Shine, a library associated with Nasheed.
Last year, the opposition coalition rejected President Nasheed's offer to work with the coalition. However, some senior PPM members have said their incarcerated leader, former President Abdulla Yameen, has now given the green light to work with The Democrats.
Speaking at the Parliament on Thursday, one of The Democrats' leaders, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, expressed the party's readiness to form alliances with any group to bring about a change in President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government.
"We are prepared to forge alliances with any necessary parties to bring about a change in President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government," she stated.
PNC's Parliamentary Group Leader and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef also echoed similar sentiments and said the party is prepared to have talks with any party or group to change the current government.
