The Democrats and Speaker Mohamed Nasheed are trailing in the presidential election, Naifaru MP and senior PPM member Ahmed Shiyam has said.
Speaking at the inaugural congress of The Democrats held at Giyasuddin School on Wednesday, Nasheed said neither himself nor the main opposition leader, former president Abdulla Yameen should contest the upcoming presidential election.
In response to Nasheed's view, Shiyam said Nasheed's statement reflects his personal opinion and that the PPM-PNC coalition has already decided on its presidential candidate for the election.
"They are yet to choose a candidate. The PPM-PNC has already named President Yameen as its candidate and has already launched his campaign," he said.
At last night's event, Nasheed emphasized that the people desire collaboration to defeat President Solih, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of those involved in politics to explore avenues that benefit the people. He called for discussions, negotiations, and compromises at the same table to discover effective ways to achieve this common objective.
