Key political leaders convening to discuss election

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed is scheduled to meet with Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader Qasim Ibrahim and Maldives National Party President Mohamed Nazim.

The meeting will be held at the JP office and party center, M. Kunooz, at 1:00 pm today. This meeting follows a separate gathering between Nazim and Qasim at Qasim-owned Sun Island Resort earlier on Tuesday.

The three are convening to discuss the upcoming presidential election, in which both Qasim and Nazim will be contesting on their respective party tickets.

Nasheed recently left the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party 9MDP) to join The Democrats. As President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih seeks a second term, The Democrats have also announced their intention to field a candidate for the election.

The Democrats are also in political talks with the opposing PPM-PNC coalition.

The presidential election will be held on September 9.
