JSC clears Justice Mahaz of disciplinary allegations

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has ruled that there is no disciplinary issue against Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir.

In December last year, the JSC initiated an investigation against Justice Mahaz following allegations that he had accepted a lunch sent to the court by a supporter of the main opposition party, the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM). This incident occurred on the day when the Supreme Court acquitted President Abdullah Yameen of money laundering charges over a year and a half ago. However, it is believed Justice had ordered and paid for the lunch himself, following the customary practice at the court, wherein Supreme Court judges often treat each other to meals. The JSC has previously alleged that Justice Mahaz was not cooperating with the investigation.

In a recent development, the judicial watchdog on Sunday said the allegations against Justice Mahaz are false. The commission said it had decided not to continue the investigation.
