Newly registered political party, the Democrats will be naming Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah as their running mate for the upcoming presidential election, according to a confirmation from a senior party member to AVAS.
The Democrats held their presidential primary held on Friday, in which Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb was the sole candidate. Out of the 3,208 voters who participated in the primary, an overwhelming 3,041 votes, accounting for 94 percent of the total, were cast in favor of appointing Ilyas as their presidential candidate. While 153 voters opposed his candidacy, nine votes were deemed invalid.
With Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah joining the ticket as the running mate, the Democrats are set to further strengthen their campaign for the September election.
