Former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has been appointed as Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s presidential candidate, Abdulla Yameen's running mate for the upcoming presidential election.
It is noteworthy that Jameel previously served as the first Vice President during Yameen's 2018 presidency. Presently, he also holds the position of lead counsel in Yameen's legal team, as Yameen serves an 11-year prison sentence following a conviction on charges of money laundering and bribery.
Despite the PPM-PNC coalition's intentions to submit Yameen's candidacy papers for the election, his current ineligibility to contest stems from the aforementioned conviction. To become eligible, a higher court must overturn the lower court's verdict.
