No provisions for postponing jail sentences in legal framework: PGO

The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has said that postponing jail sentences is not a recognized practice within the legal system of the Maldives.

Earlier this week, Former President Abdullah Yameen, who is serving an 11-year sentence on a money laundering and bribery conviction, applied to the High Court for an order to postpone the execution of his 1sentence.

A PGO representative said the Criminal Procedure Act lacks provisions for postponing prison sentences. The spokesperson highlighted that designated application forms would exist if such an action were legally acknowledged.

President Yameen's lawyers have also noted that there are no designated forms to submit such a request.

The former president has requested to postpone his sentence amid delays in his High Court appeal challenging the Criminal Court verdict. He had previously sought a similar order communicated via a letter, but it was not submitted according to policies.
