The first Resident Ambassador of the United States of America to the Maldives, Mr. Hugo Hue-Ho Yon, has presented his credentials to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The ambassador presented his credentials to the President at a special ceremony held at the President's Office today.
Following the ceremony, the President and the US Ambassador discussed further strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries. During the meeting, President Solih conveyed his congratulations to Ambassador Yon on assuming his role.
The President said the establishment of a US Embassy in the Maldives and the appointment of an Ambassador signify an expansion of the partnership between the Maldives and the US. He underscored the reopening of the Maldives Embassy in Washington, D.C. was also a step forward in the Maldives' foreign policy. He added that the embassy will foster stronger ties through various avenues, including people-to-people connections, economic and trade collaborations, and cultural exchanges.
During the meeting, Ambassador Hugo Hue-Ho Yon highlighted the Maldives' dedicated efforts to address and mitigate the impacts of climate change, acknowledging the challenges the nation faces in this regard. The Ambassador extended his gratitude to President Solih and the Maldivian Government for their cooperation in facilitating the establishment of the US Embassy in the Maldives.
The Maldives and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1965.
