President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced his decision to implement a flat rate for electricity, regardless of the amount consumed.
Speaking at a campaign event on Thursday night, President Solih said many people expressed their struggles with rising electricity bills and asked for relief. The president acknowledged the financial struggle faced by individuals who found it difficult to make ends meet due to substantial portions of their income being allocated to rent and electricity expenses.
In response to these concerns, President Solih said the government has now decided to change the electricity rate to a flat rate to provide relief to the people. The change will come into effect from that day, he said.
Explaining the system, the President said currently, if electricity usage exceeded a certain threshold, the price per unit would increase. However, he emphasized that moving forward, households would be charged a consistent flat rate, regardless of their electricity consumption. This measure is expected to prevent a significant surge in electricity bills, regardless of usage, he said.
