Suspect in Nasheed attack sentenced to five years in prison

A suspect arrested in connection to the terror attack on Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, Ali Manik, has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Ali Manik faced charges of supporting a terrorist organization, with Mohamed Thasleem, who was arrested alongside him, facing the same charges. However, presiding judge Alii Adam ruled that the charges could not be substantiated against Thasleem.

Both suspects denied the allegations against them, prompting the prosecution to present evidence to prove the charges.

Following Ali Manik's conviction, the prosecution sought the maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment for the offense, despite Ali Manik's lawyer requesting a three-year sentence. The Criminal Court judge ultimately imposed a five-year prison term.

Although Ali Manik has been sentenced to five years in prison, he will serve two years, nine months, and 29 days, taking into account the time he has already spent in custody, which amounts to two years, two months, and one day on the charges for which he was convicted.
