The Election Commission (EC) has given the green light for the formation of the People's National Front (PNF), the new political party led by former President Abdulla Yameen.
After internal strifes with the leadership of the ruling PPM-PNC coalition, President Yameen parted ways with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) last Thursday, announcing his intention to register his own political party.
Despite Yameen spearheading the new party's creation, he cannot serve as the legal founder of the party as he is currently serving a sentence on a money laundering and bribery conviction. Therefore, an application seeking EC's approval to form the party was submitted at EC on November 26, with Yameen's son, Zane Abdulla Yameen, listed as the party's founder.
On Wednesday, the EC granted the approval to form the party, with EC's President Fuwaf Thawfeeq handing over the certificate of approval. The PNF will have three months from today to reach 3,000 members.
