President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will deliver his inaugural presidential address on February 5, marking the opening of Parliament for the new year.
The parliamentary session will commence at 9:00 am, with the primary agenda focused on the delivery of the presidential statement and the response from the minority party.
The Presidential Statement is required to be delivered by the President at the opening sitting of the first sitting of the year, in accordance with Article 84 of the Constitution. The article states that at the opening sitting of the first session of the year's term, the president must deliver a statement that outlines the current state of the country and the President's proposed measures for further improvement.
Traditionally, the day the President delivers the presidential address is declared a public holiday.
There have been changes in the political party representation in Parliament since President Dr. Muizzu took office. The number of the ruling PPM-PNC members in parliament has increased to 18, making PNC the minority party in parliament. The current number of MDP members in Parliament has reduced to 42 while The Democrats now hold 13 seats.
