Tourism Minister affirms support for local artists

Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal has reassured the local artistic community that the government would not take any actions that would adversely impact local talents.

Minister Faisal's comments come amid concern among local artists and talents regarding the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI)'s proposal to issue visas for foreign artists to perform in resorts, citing a purported lack of talent in the Maldives. Issuing visas for foreign artists to perform at resorts had been discontinued during the administration of former President Abdullah Yameen.

Minister Faisal said in a post on X that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government would not take any action that negatively affects local artists.

“In the coming days, I will meet with the relevant authorities, listen to the concerns, and seek solutions in consultation with the President,” Faisal said.

Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, Ibrahim Waheed, also affirmed that the country's people will promote the country's arts sector. He expressed confidence that, with the leadership of Minister Faisal, local artists will continue to thrive.
