MVR 422 mln disbursed to fishermen since assuming office

Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam revealed today that the current government has disbursed a total of MVR 422 million to fishermen since assuming office.

Responding to an inquiry by an MP at Monday's Parliament session, Minister Shiyam clarified that the government had disbursed a total of MVR 422 million to fishermen including oil and ice on credit. He also acknowledged an outstanding debt of MVR 270 million owed to fishermen.

Minister Shiyam noted the challenges inherited by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration, highlighting a previous debt of MVR 250 million owed to fishermen upon assuming office. He assured that while these challenges still persist, the government is optimistic about overcoming them in the near future.

Challenging Shiyam's response, Henveiru South MP Hussain Shaheem raised concerns about discrepancies in the amounts disbursed to fishermen. He said the actual disbursements do not even come close to the figures provided by the minister.
