An additional MVR 35 million has been disbursed to fishermen.
Last week, local fishermen staged protests on Kooddoo island, home to MIFCO's fish factory, demanding payment from the government for supplied fish. They indicated that MVR 300 million remained unpaid at the time of the strike.
Following the protests, the government agreed to deposit a total of MVR 100 million to the fishermen by Monday this week, with the remaining amount to be released before March 5.
A MIFCO official told AVAS that the latest deposit of MVR 35 million is part of the MVR 100 million that the government agreed to pay by Monday. Therefore, a total of MVR 105 million, exceeding the initially promised amount, has been allocated to fishermen by Monday, inclusive of the MVR 70 million deposited the previous week.
"The government is paying the fishermen as agreed. The President also gives high priority to pay the fishermen as soon as possible," the MIFCO official said.
