Ungoofaaru added to Urban Center establishment plans

The government has decided to include Raa Ungoofaaru among the islands where urban centers will be established.

The announcement was made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu while addressing the people of Ungoofaaru island on his ongoing visit to the island.

The commitment to establish seven urban centers nationwide is part of President Dr. Muizzu's presidential pledge.

“In my campaign proposal, I said that I would establish integrated development zones in the northernmost four atolls and the southernmost four atolls, and seven urban centers in the country. This island is one of the latter," he said.

Dr. Muizzu further expressed intentions to explore the inclusion of Ungulu Island, located near Ungoofaaru, within Ungoofaaru's jurisdiction. He said he would clarify if the island is part of any agreements or legal disputes, and would remove the island from any such locks to ensure the island's ownership for the people of Ungoofaaru.

Ungoofaaru currently stands as the second most visited island in the north for medical treatments. The president highlighted plans to establish an MRI service at Ungoofaaru Hospital, increase the number of doctors and nurses, and upgrade the hospital's service to the tertiary level.
